2005 - Busiest Year Ever for the RNLI

Lifeboats were launched a total of 3,661 times in June, July and August making it the busiest summer on record for the RNLI. The rise is 20 per cent more than the previous record for this period and 10 per cent up on last year. Lifeboat crews in the North of England launched an average of five times each day in June, July, and August, carrying out 460 rescues over the summer period. The RNLI's North Division includes 34 lifeboat stations and stretches from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Skegness on the east coast and from Silloth to West Kirby on the west. The north's busiest lifeboat station was Whitby, with 29 launches, 8 up on Barrow on the north-west coast with 21 launches.
