Ocean Training Principle receives a Fellowship of the Royal Institute of Navigation from HRH the Duke of Edinburgh

In the summer of 2008 Ted Miley, our Principal, went to the Royal Geographical Society, in London , to receive a Fellowship of the Royal Institute of Navigation. This was to recognize a lifetime achievement in both sea and air navigation and particularly in the development of Navigation Distance Learning courses. Ted went to sea as a navigating cadet with BP Tanker Co. Ltd when he was 16 years old.

After many years as a navigating officer and 12 ships he decided to join the Ocean Weather Service as a navigating officer/aircraft coordinator in the North Atlantic - sometimes experiencing 120 foot waves!

Ted then entered civil aviation as an Air Traffic Controller

Serving at Heathrow, Stanstead, Gatwick, Manchester , Belfast and of course West Drayton (London Air Traffic Control Centre - now replaced by the new UK centre at Swanick - near Southampton )

During this time he kept up his maritime skills teaching class based RYA courses. Ocean Training was formed 12 years ago and Ted is delighted his life has come full circle - back to the life on the ocean wave!
