About This Course:
The course is AMERC (MCA) approved.
Aim
Theory and Practical training course required for all operators wishing to use the radio system. It is a mandatory requirement for the issue of an Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (GOC)
Entry requirements
Candidates are not expected to have any prior knowledge of radio systems. A general understanding of Geography and measurement of Latitude/Longitude scales can help but is not essential.
Outcome
To able to use the GMDSS radio system on board a vessel for routine or priority use.
Assessment
The course is examined on the last 2 days of the course. The exam consists of a theory paper and two practical elements.
Course content
Duration of course
is 10 days, (typically Monday to Friday over two weeks)
Within the course the following practical and theoretical areas are dealt with;
" Use of VHF, MF, HF R/T & DSC
" Use of Satellite equipment
" Use of EPIRB & SART
" Use of NAVTEX
" How to send and receive calls and messages.
Course delivery
Using GMDSS Transas simulation, each candidate has their own virtual radio station. Interactive activities, and supported by Mycity VLE.
